Political Skills in Other Professions

We help to develop the craft of leadership by drawing out skills and insights from the world of politics that are applicable in any profession, and help organisations to navigate political systems.

Inside the Political Mind draws on insights from behavioural science, organisational psychology and business school techniques to understand how reform and development is managed in the world of politics.

We have translated its central lessons into a series of courses so that leaders in every other profession can learn from sophisticated political leaders in managing complex situations and constantly shifting coalitions.

These include:

How to think like an effective political leader

  • The key skills that separate effective leaders from their counterparts: why mētis matters and how to develop it.

How organisations function

  • Why it is important to understand the difference between what the rules say and what the rules mean: norms, mētis, and ecosystems of reciprocal altruism.

Recognising change as a political struggle in any organisation

  • Understanding opposition to change: Lessons from the political world in how to align interests and create coalitions for change.

Practical & political strategies for mapping interests and incentives

  • Change as a permanent process of negotiation.

Radical incrementalism and embedding change

  • Insights from behavioural science to create new norms, creating pockets of good practice and the ripple effect.

Engaging with parliament, government and the political world

In addition to developing leadership skills we also work with organisations in private, public and charitable sectors to improve the way that they engage with the policy process.

These include courses how to lobby effectively, engage with ministers and influence the legislative process, as well as practical session to help leaders prepare for select committee hearings or meetings inside parliament and government.

These courses may be delivered in-house or in partnership with academic institutions such as King’s College London. Please get in touch to find out more.
