Sarah Childs is Professor of Politics and Gender at the University of Edinburgh. The author of five research monographs (New Labour’s Women MPs, 2004; Women and British Party Politics, 2008; Sex Gender and the Conservative Party, with Paul Webb, 2012; the award-winning Feminist Democratic Representation, 2020, with Karen Celis), her latest, Designing Feminist Institutions is just off the press (OUP, 2026). The latter draws on Sarah’s experiences seconded to the UK House of Commons and the drafting of her The Good Parliament Report (2016). An impactful academic, Sarah works with international and regional organizations, including the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, undertaking Gender Sensitive Parliament audits and drafting associated materials and reports. In the UK Parliament Sarah advised the Commons Reference Group on Representation and Inclusion which drove GSP reforms at Westminster, most notably, the introduction of proxy voting for MPs on ‘babyleave’ in 2019/20. Now based in Scotland and building on its, A Parliament for All Report (2023) and GSP a Practical Guide (co-authored with  Meryl Kenny, 2025), Sarah advises the Scottish Gender Sensitive Advisory Group.
